What is a cordless and handheld vacuum cleaner
Cordless and handheld vacuum cleaners with handles are particularly compact. While small battery-powered vacuums are great for removing small amounts of dirt like bread crumbs around the house or in the car, traditional handheld vacuums with handles are great for large-scale household use.
The small battery-powered handheld vacuums come with a dust box and permanent filter or a dust collection bin only. They are less suitable for large-scale applications due to their limited collection volume and low battery capacity. After about ten minutes of continuous operation, the vacuum cleaners usually need to be recharged from the power supply. Therefore, they are very convenient, quickly available and do not need to be plugged into the socket to vacuum, so the cords do not get tangled.

What is a stick vacuum cleaner?

What is a brush vacuum cleaner?

Floor vacuum cleaner – with or without bag?
The various types of vacuum cleaners differ significantly in terms of components and functions. Two types of vacuum cleaners are commonly used in households: the conventional floor vacuum cleaner and the portable or compact battery vacuum cleaner. As a result, these two types take up more space in comparison. Basically, the body of a traditional vacuum cleaner consists of two parts:
- Suction tube
- Dirt collection area
In terms of dirt collection area, vacuum cleaners are divided into bagged and bagless units. These two groups also differ in the way they work.
The vacuum bag
The bagged vacuum cleaner is the classic vacuum cleaner, while the bagless models are considered the modern version. The bag, which serves as a filter, retains dust and dirt directly in the bag thanks to the airflow of the vacuum cleaner. The air, freed from coarse impurities, then passes through another filter. Meanwhile, modern dust bags have grown so much that they can hold even the smallest dust particles.
When the bag is completely filled with dust, it must be removed from the vacuum cleaner, disposed of and replaced with a new bag. This means that bag owners regularly buy more dust bags. However, these models are usually cheaper to purchase than bagless vacuums.
When the dust bag is full, the suction power is reduced. Therefore, a timely change is absolutely necessary.
The frequency with which the bag must be changed, of course, depends on the frequency of use of vacuuming and the dirtiness of the surfaces to be cleaned. It is important to change the bag throughout the day, otherwise the normally high suction power will decrease significantly, resulting in a worse result. In addition, bacteria and fungi can quickly form and multiply in a full bag, resulting in an unpleasant odor. Many vacuum cleaners with bags have a convenient change indicator, which usually lights up red when the bag is full. Changing bags is usually very easy. Nevertheless, care should be taken not to move the bag to another place too quickly, as the dirt sucked in can easily fall out of the bag opening.

The bagless vacuum cleaner
The modern alternative to the bagged vacuum cleaner is, of course, the bagless vacuum cleaner. Also known as a cyclonic vacuum cleaner because of the most widely used technology. The air is sucked in at the same time as the dirt particles and rotates inside the vacuum cleaner, so that dust and dirt are separated from the air by centrifugal force and deposited in the collection container.
Basically, the vacuum cleaner models differ here by two different systems:
single cyclone vacuum cleaner
These vacuum cleaners mix the air by blowing it into a conical container. This system works very well, especially with large dust particles. The finest particles are retained by a central paper filter, which quickly becomes dirty and therefore needs to be cleaned more frequently to prevent the suction power from decreasing.
Multi-cyclone vacuum cleaner
Like the single cyclone vacuum cleaner, the multicyclone vacuum cleaner first cleans the air of the largest dirt particles, which are guided by centrifugal force in the collection tank. A second cleaning phase then passes the air through several small cyclones, bringing it to a very high speed. In this way, even very small dust and dirt particles are filtered out of the air.
While single cyclone vacuums do a good job of cleaning the air of large dirt particles, multiple cyclone vacuums reliably filter them out, even the finest dust particles. The more cyclones the air passes through, the more it ends up exiting the vacuum cleaner. Unlike the basic cyclonic vacuum cleaner, many of these models do not require a central filter, eliminating the need for cleaning without consumers having to worry about reducing suction power.
Thanks to the transparent collection tank, consumers can directly see if they need to empty and clean it.
Although bagless vacuums are typically more expensive to purchase than bag vacuums, there is no operating cost of buying new bags on a regular basis. In the long run, consumers who use a cyclonic vacuum save not only money, but also the effort and time it takes to find and purchase the right bag. They also avoid bagless waste and do something good for the environment. Another advantage of bagless vacuum cleaners is that they are usually odorless. In many models, the dust container is transparent, so consumers can directly see if it is full and if it already needs to be emptied. However, cleaning the dust container and – if present – the filter usually requires more effort than changing a bag.

Which vacuum cleaner is the right one for people with allergies?
The question of whether bagged or cyclonic vacuum cleaners are better for people with allergies cannot be answered in general terms. Bagless vacuum cleaners with multi-cyclone technology clean the air very thoroughly and reliably. However, when emptying and cleaning the dust container, contact with dust cannot be avoided. On the other hand, vacuum cleaners with bags today have very high quality and reliable filters, so they can absorb allergens. Some manufacturers also offer special bags with an antibacterial coating that prevents the proliferation of dust mites, mold and bacteria. However, contact with allergens can also occur during simple bag changes. For allergy sufferers, therefore, an efficient filter system and constant suction power of the device are more important than whether it is a bag or a cyclonic vacuum cleaner. The bag must be changed or the collection container emptied by consumers without allergies.
Water vacuum cleaner
A bagless alternative to the cyclone vacuum cleaner for allergy sufferers is the vacuum cleaner with water filter, which is considered very hygienic. These take nature as a model and clean – like rain – the air of the smallest dust particles such as pollen through the water.
For this purpose, these special models are usually equipped with a collection tank filled with fresh tap water before each suction operation. Thanks to the excellent filtering function of the water, additional filters are usually not required. Despite the fact that the air is cleaned so thoroughly, the care and maintenance of the vacuum cleaner takes a long time. For example, the water tank must be emptied after each suction cycle to prevent mold growth.

Manual/active vacuum cleaner – the compact alternative
As an alternative or complement to the traditional vacuum cleaner – with or without a bag – many households have a manual or battery-powered vacuum cleaner. This type of vacuum cleaner is divided into two different types:
- The small and compact cordless vacuum cleaner is mainly used to remove small amounts of dirt, such as bread crumbs, from the house or car.
- Two-in-one combination models consisting of a handheld vacuum cleaner and a battery-powered vacuum cleaner, also known as a handheld vacuum cleaner.
Construction and function
The functionality of both types of compact vacuum cleaners is similar to that of conventional floor vacuums. The battery-powered vacuum cleaner consists of an elongated housing that contains the motor, fan, battery and collection tank. On the top there is usually a handle, and on the bottom the housing goes directly into the suction line.
The two-in-one devices consist of a handy battery vacuum cleaner, which is fixed in a long handle. At the bottom is the floor nozzle, which is identical to that of a conventional vacuum cleaner. A special subgroup of this type of vacuum cleaner is the stick vacuum cleaner subgroup.
Advantages and disadvantages compared to a vacuum cleaner
The biggest advantage of battery-powered vacuum cleaners over traditional vacuum cleaners is that they do not require the annoying power cord. This means that users in larger or angled homes not only don’t have to plug and unplug the cord from various outlets, but also don’t have to worry about stretching the cord or attaching it to a piece of furniture. This makes battery-powered vacuum cleaners much more flexible. Since they are also much smaller and lighter than other vacuum cleaners, they are also great for vacuuming in hard-to-reach areas or tightly furnished homes. In addition, they save a lot of space. Some bar vacuums are even capable of vacuuming liquids.
Unlike the floor vacuum cleaner, the battery-powered vacuum cleaner is not suitable for large-scale use. Most models require about ten minutes of suction at the highest level to charge at the output. Charging time is usually at least five hours. In addition, compact, battery-powered handheld vacuums can’t quite compete with today’s vacuum cleaners in terms of suction power.

In general, conventional battery-powered vacuum cleaners are better suited as a supplement to conventional vacuum cleaners, for example, to quickly remove crumbs or cat litter, or to clean the car in between. The suction power and capacity of handheld vacuums can’t compete with the larger models. However, for consumers who want to use them to clean a small, well-furnished house, these devices are usually quite sufficient. However, allergy sufferers should preferably use a vacuum cleaner because of the higher suction power.
The right filter in the vacuum cleaner
In addition to the bag that collects coarse dirt and dust particles, vacuum cleaners are also equipped with additional filter systems that remove fine dust particles and allergens from the agitated air in the vacuum cleaner. Therefore, the quality of the filter system determines the cleanliness of the exhaust air that the vacuum cleaner emits into the room.
In addition, the bag vacuum cleaners are equipped with two additional filters:
It is located between the dust bag and the motor and protects the motor and the fan from coarse dirt, hard particles and sharp objects when the bag ruptures. This is usually a coarse filter that consumers need to change once a year.
This is either a micro filter or a HEPA filter that is located behind the motor and eventually removes particulate matter and other pollutants from the air before it returns to the room. To ensure consistently good filtration, it is recommended that the exhaust filter be changed at least twice a year.
Bagless vacuum cleaners do not contain a dust bag, but this does not automatically mean that they do not have a filtration system. As a rule, bagless vacuums have an exhaust filter that cleans the exhaust air of fine residual particles, as in the case of pocket vacuums. Single cyclone vacuums in particular are also equipped with a central filter. This is a lamellar filter located in the dust container that cleans the intake air. Consumers should clean the central filter regularly to ensure that the suction power and performance of the filter is not affected. Manufacturers often recommend changing it at least once a year.
For the exhaust filter, consumers can choose between a microfilter and a HEPA filter. Microfilters are generally slightly more coarsely porous than HEPA filters. With the powerful overall design of the vacuum cleaner, micro filters always provide good dust retention. HEPA filters are generally known to achieve a higher degree of separation of the smallest dust, dirt and micro particles. However, it should be noted that HEPA filter is not the same as HEPA filter, but different classifications can be distinguished. In the following section, we will explain the various HEPA filters available on the market and their differences.
Classification of HEPA filters
HEPA stands for “High Efficiency Particulate Air”, which means that the filter can trap even very small particles such as fine dust, pollen or dust mites. While conventional filters work like a very fine kitchen strainer, filtering objects above a certain size, HEPA filters use special effects that allow them to filter even the smallest objects. However, there are different classes of HEPA filters that differ primarily in their collection efficiency. This means that the different classes of filters are capable of capturing different amounts of fine dust. As a result, five classifications of HEPA filters can be distinguished:

While HEPA class E10 filters can filter more than 85% of the fine dust contained in the dust, H14 filters can filter even more than 99.995% of the fine dust. The latter solution is therefore ideal for people who are allergic to, for example, house dust or pollen. They filter allergens almost 100 percent into the air and thus provide a better indoor climate.
However, there are filters that can retain even finer dust than HEPA class H14 filters. These are Ultra HEPA or ULPA (“Ultra Low Penetration Air Filter”) filters. Vacuum cleaners equipped with such ULPA filters are mainly used in areas where special hygiene requirements apply. These include, for example, operating rooms, research laboratories or quarantine stations.
The energy label and the performance of the vacuum cleaner
Since September 2014, a new European regulation has applied to the sale of vacuum cleaners. In particular, it sets limits on the energy consumption of vacuum cleaners sold at retail. The regulation limits the nominal energy consumption of vacuum cleaners to 1,600 watts. As of September 2017, it can be as low as 900 watts to save even more energy.
However, the new regulation does not apply to all types of vacuum cleaners. As for household appliances, the following types are not covered by the EU regulation:
- Battery-powered vacuum cleaner
- Robot vacuum cleaner
- Liquid vacuum cleaner
- Combination wet and dry vacuum cleaners
- Industrial vacuum cleaners
- Central vacuum cleaners
- Drubber care products

Since the EU regulation came into force, the affected vacuum cleaners – especially conventional vacuum cleaners – as well as refrigerators and washing machines must have an energy label. The following section explains what the energy label of vacuum cleaners shows and what the EU regulations mean for the performance of the vacuum cleaner.
Does less energy consumption mean less suction power?
The new EU regulation on the energy efficiency of vacuum cleaners has many people worried that vacuum cleaners will become more energy efficient in the future and lose power in the process. However, those who fear having to vacuum a warm breeze in the future can sit back and relax: The wattage energy consumption that must be reduced to save electricity has nothing to do with the cleaning and suction performance of the appliance. On the contrary, the EU regulation aims not only to save electricity, but also to make vacuum cleaners more durable and powerful.
The power of the device indicated on the nameplate refers to the vacuum cleaner motor and only indicates the amount of electricity that the vacuum cleaner draws from the socket. Higher power therefore means higher energy consumption. The power is not decisive for the suction and cleaning performance of the vacuum cleaner. Much more important are the motor technology, the intake manifold and nozzle design.
The energy label at a glance
In addition to ensuring compliance with the new EU regulations, the energy label makes it easier for consumers to compare different models by providing key technical data at a glance, such as the vacuum cleaner’s energy efficiency class and operating volume. The following graphic provides a clear overview of the energy label of vacuum cleaners.
Energy efficiency and annual power consumption
In terms of energy efficiency, the various vacuum cleaner models are divided into seven classes from A to G, with A being very efficient and G being very inefficient. Low energy consumption is essential to be classified in the best possible class. The difference between each class is six kilowatt hours. This means that a model in energy efficiency class A will consume 36 kilowatt hours less per year than a vacuum cleaner in class G for the same use.
In addition to the energy efficiency class, consumers will find the vacuum cleaner’s average annual energy consumption in kilowatt hours per year on the energy label. This figure is based on 50 vacuuming operations per year (approximately one vacuuming operation per week) with an average living space of 87 square meters. Electricity consumption therefore varies depending on the living space to be vacuumed and the number of cleaning processes. According to the new EU regulation, the maximum annual electricity consumption is limited to 62 kilowatt hours per vacuum cleaner. As of September 2017, only vacuum cleaners that consume no more than 43 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year may be sold.
The dust emission class
In the lower part of the energy label, the manufacturer must indicate, among other things, the dust emission class of the device. It evaluates the quality and cleanliness of the air that the vacuum cleaner emits into the room. This information is especially important for people who are allergic to house dust. As for the energy efficiency class, the dust emission class also has a seven-point scale from A to G. Dust emission class A vacuum cleaners are the best at dust retention, while class G vacuum cleaners are the worst. The number or count of dust particles released into the air depends largely on the quality of the filter.
The class to which a vacuum cleaner is assigned is determined by the so-called dust emission value. Class A is used for vacuum cleaners with a dust emission value of no more than 0.02%. This means that vacuum cleaners of emission class A emit less or exactly 0.02% of the dust sucked in with the exhaust air into the room. If a dust emission class A vacuum cleaner sucks in 100,000 dust particles, less than 20 of the sucked-in particles will return to the room with the stale air. The following overview shows the permissible dust emission values for the seven different classes.
As of September 2017, only vacuum cleaners with a dust emission of less than one percent may be sold according to European regulations. Therefore, vacuum cleaners currently labeled with dust emission class G will no longer be permitted from now on.
The cleaning class for carpets and hard floors
Information on the cleaning performance of the various models can also be found at the bottom of the energy label. Here you will find information about classes for carpet and hard floor cleaning. Both are divided into seven classes from A to G, with A characterized by very good cleaning performance and G by very poor cleaning performance.
The carpet cleaning class indicates, as a percentage, the maximum amount of dust that the particular vacuum cleaner can pick up on a standard vacuum cleaner test carpet when the bag or collection bin is empty. The carpet cleaning class to which a vacuum cleaner is assigned is determined by its so-called dust absorption value. To receive a carpet cleaning class A rating, this value must be equal to or greater than 91%. This means that a carpet cleaning class A vacuum cleaner must absorb at least 91% of the dust from the carpet. In contrast, class G vacuum cleaners are classified as vacuum cleaners with a dust absorption value of less than 71%. The EU regulation stipulates that the dust absorption value must be at least 70%. As of September 2017, it must even be at least 75%.
By using the hard floor cleaning class, consumers can see how the vacuum cleaner cleans hard surfaces such as laminate, parquet, tile or wood floors. As with the carpet cleaning class, the hard floor cleaning class assignment is also based on the dust pickup value of the vacuum cleaner. This is determined by suctioning a standard test panel with diagonal seal at maximum suction power and empty collection bag or container. Since hard floors are generally easier to clean than carpets, different values apply to the hard floor cleaning classes and the corresponding carpet cleaning classes. Since September 2014, the dust collection value on hard floors must be at least 95%. As of September 2017, European regulations even require vacuum cleaners to be able to pick up at least 98% of dust on hard floors.
The operating volume
In addition to energy efficiency, dust emission and cleaning performance of the device, the operating volume is an important criterion when choosing a new vacuum cleaner. It is expressed in decibels. The value on the energy label indicates the volume of the vacuum cleaner when you vacuum a standard carpet and in the immediate vicinity of the device. The higher the decibel value, the louder the vacuum cleaner. Therefore, consumers who want to vacuum as easily as possible should be aware of a low decibel value.
According to European regulations, as of September 2017, new vacuum cleaners must not exceed a maximum volume of 80 decibels. This value is roughly equivalent to the volume of heavy road traffic. Very quiet vacuum cleaners with an operating volume of 70 decibels or less are already available on the market today. This is roughly equivalent to the noise level of a car or a normal conversation. In addition, robotic vacuum cleaners are considered to be a type of quiet vacuum cleaner.
However, out of consideration for their neighbors, owners of very quiet vacuum cleaners should also refrain from vacuuming on weekdays between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m. and between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., as well as on Sundays and holidays during general quiet hours.
Particularly practical vacuum cleaner accessories
Many manufacturers offer useful accessories for their vacuum cleaners. In some cases, this is even included in the scope of delivery. These include special nozzles, brushes or vacuum bags. In this section, we collect some examples and show which accessories are absolutely necessary and simplify vacuuming.
Different vacuum cleaner nozzles
Different vacuum cleaner nozzles turn vacuum cleaners into universal cleaning devices for different floor coverings and applications. The following three nozzles are among the most common and are included in many conventional vacuum cleaners:
The universal nozzle
The so-called universal nozzle is suitable for both carpets and hard floors. For this purpose, it has a silk rim that can be retracted or extended as needed with a pedal lever. This allows consumers to retract the hair crown when vacuuming on carpet, making it easier for the nozzle to glide across the carpet. When vacuuming hard floors such as tile, boards or laminates, they extend the bristles to prevent the tip from scratching the floor.
The pad tip
As the name suggests, the upholstery tip is used to thoroughly and gently clean upholstery fabrics such as sofas, armchairs or mattresses. With a typical width of about 15 centimeters, it is generally narrower than a universal nozzle, making it suitable for vacuuming armrests, headrests or other upholstered surfaces that are difficult to vacuum with a larger nozzle. It is also easier and better for the user to enter cracks and corners. Typically, upholstery nozzles have rounded edges so consumers can vacuum upholstered furniture or delicate mattresses without damaging them. Many upholstery nozzles are also equipped with a silk ring or yarn lifter.
The Crack Nozzle
Like universal and upholstery nozzles, the crevice nozzle is also part of the standard equipment of a good vacuum cleaner. Its distinctive feature is its long and narrow shape, which flattens even further towards the front. At the tip, the diameter of the nozzle is usually only one centimeter. In this way, consumers can reach corners that are difficult or impossible to reach with larger nozzles, and they can also thoroughly clean joints and edges. However, sealing nozzles are usually made of hard plastic and are therefore not suitable for vacuuming delicate surfaces.
Other special nozzles
In addition to the three standard nozzles, consumers will find a wide selection of other specialty nozzles to meet all their needs. These include special flexible nozzles that provide a convenient and effective alternative to spring vacuums and thoroughly clean shelves or other furniture while protecting the surface. Some manufacturers also offer very soft nozzles for cleaning parquet or laminate, equipped with felt pads to prevent damage to delicate surfaces.
For heavy and deep dirt in carpets, some manufacturers offer particularly powerful turbo and power brushes as additional accessories. The turbo brush, also called turbine nozzle, is particularly suitable for deep cleaning of carpets, car seats and upholstered seats. It is characterized by rotating brush rollers that are driven by the air flow and, among other things, lift the velvet of the carpet. The so-called electric brushes also have rotating brush rollers. However, as the name suggests, it is powered by an electric motor.
Power brushes are very often used for cleaning public places or hotel rooms, but they are also suitable for pet owners for thorough removal of pet hair and dust mites. Consumers who decide to buy a power brush should make sure that the brushes are adjustable in height to fit the height of the carpet hair.
Fitting vacuum bags
The basic equipment of pocket vacuums includes matching dust bags. Even if replacement bags are included, consumers will need to purchase them at some point and ask themselves which dust filter bag best fits their model.
On the market there are so-called universal bags that promise to be compatible with many different devices. However, these filters rarely fit exactly into the port of the respective model, so they filter the intake air less well and are therefore only conditionally recommended. Consumers who use precision-fit vacuum bags achieve a much better vacuum result. However, with the wide range of bags available, it is not easy to find the right one for each model. For this reason, the German Institute for Standardization (DIN) has repeatedly proposed the introduction of a standard for vacuum bags to make it easier for consumers to find the right bag. However, manufacturers rejected the standardization of vacuum cleaner bags. Therefore, consumers who are bored with searching for a vacuum bag should use a vacuum cleaner without a bag.
Vacuum bag made of paper or non-woven?
Vacuum cleaner bags are distinguished not only by their shape and size, but also by their material. Conventional dust bags are made of paper and have up to four layers to ensure good dust retention. Paper bags have the advantage over non-woven dust bags that they are usually much cheaper to buy. In addition, therapy bags are environmentally friendly because they are made of recyclable materials.
Recyclable and cost-effective: paper vacuum bags
On the other hand, polar nonwoven dust bags are stronger and more tear-resistant than paper bags, and they also score high in better filtration of very fine particles. In addition, vacuum cleaners with non-woven bags lose less suction power when the bag is full than vacuum cleaners with paper bags. Therefore, paper and non-woven bags have their own advantages and disadvantages, so each consumer must decide individually which material is best suited to his needs.
Tips for effective suction
Even if the vacuum cleaner itself carries the device, there are some points that consumers can take into account to comfortably achieve a very good cleaning result. In the following section, our editors collect useful tips on how to use a vacuum cleaner.
Clean the vacuum cleaner regularly
The vacuum cleaner can work at full suction power only if the user cleans it regularly. This includes the following steps:
- Use your hand or a comb to remove hair and lint from the floor nozzle.
- Soak the hose and vacuum cleaner hose in water, rinse and allow to dry.
- Wash the central filter and the HEPA filter in hot water and dry completely.
- Clean or replace the air and engine exhaust filters (at least once a year)
- Replace the vacuum cleaner bag or empty the collection container.
- Wipe the housing with a damp cloth and, if necessary, some cleaning agent.
The most common reasons for a reduction in suction power are a full vacuum bag, a dirty brush, a clogged vacuum hose or hoses, and clogged filters. Consumers are therefore advised to clean their vacuum cleaner regularly and thoroughly to avoid a decrease in suction power.
Pet owners often have difficulty removing all hair from their pets. While there are mainly hard floors in the house, this business is still relatively easy. It is more difficult to remove pet hair from carpets or upholstery. Special turbo and electric nozzles with at least one rotating brush roller remove even stubborn pet hair from carpet by painting it. The special nozzles are replaced by brush vacuums that come standard with an electric nozzle. Upholstery is the best way to remove pet hair from narrow mini turbo brushes or high-quality upholstery nozzles. In addition, some manufacturers offer special nozzles for epilating pet hair, which use special microflower strips to completely remove dog or cat hair from carpets and hard floors.
